Portage Park blaze leaves 3 critically injured, including 8-year-old boy

Three people, including an 8-year-old boy, were in critical condition after being rescued from a fire Monday morning in the Portage Park neighborhood.

Crews responded to the fire in a home in the 4000 block of North Austin Avenue about 6:15 a.m. Inside, they found the boy, a 34-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, Chicago police said in a statement.

All three were taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, with burns and smoke inhalation, according to the statement, which added that eight people were left homeless by the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
