Two Republican candidates in closely watched U.S. Senate races are calling for President Trump’s war with Iran to end quickly after previously supporting his authority to continue it.
U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson (R-IA), the Republican nominee for Senate in Iowa, said the conflict is driving up costs for her constituents.
“Iowans are being squeezed and shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran,” Hinson wrote on social media.
Hinson called for temporarily suspending federal gasoline taxes, pausing diesel exports, and bringing the war “to a successful and immediate end.”

Hinson has voted six times against House measures intended to restrict Trump’s authority to continue the war, including a vote last week, according to Reuters.
Her Democratic opponent, Iowa State Representative Josh Turek, responded by pointing to those votes.
“It’s easy to send a tweet, but when you had the chance to vote to end this war, you chose not to,” Turek wrote.

Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers also called for a quick end to the war in a campaign advertisement filmed inside a grocery store.
“Groceries cost too much,” Rogers said. “We have to bring prices down.”
“The war with Iran needs to end and end quickly,” he continued. “When it does, energy costs will plummet. But Michigan families can’t afford to wait for that to happen. We need to do something now.”

Rogers called for temporarily suspending state and federal gasoline taxes and halting U.S. diesel exports.
The former congressman previously supported Trump’s strikes against Iran. During a July interview with CBS Detroit, Rogers argued against limiting the president’s war powers while Trump was negotiating an end to the conflict.
Rogers is running against Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed in a race that could help determine control of the Senate.
El-Sayed accused Rogers of changing his position in response to the political consequences of rising fuel costs.
“Mike Rogers is only flip-flopping now because gas hit $5 a gallon and diesel prices hit record highs,” El-Sayed said.

The issue is especially pronounced in Iowa, where diesel fuels farm equipment and the trucks used to transport crops and livestock. National diesel prices have reached record highs during the nearly seven-month war.
Two other Iowa Republicans facing competitive elections have already changed their votes. Representatives Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks joined Democrats last week in supporting limits on Trump’s Iran war powers after previously opposing congressional restrictions.
