Participants got a little fresh air — make that a lot of fresh air — during the Union Rescue Mission’s 8th annual “Over the Edge” fundraising event takes place on Friday at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City. The fund-raiser continues on Saturday.
It was a tall task — literally. Volunteers rappelled 25 stories down the side of the hotel, aiming to raise at least $1,000 per participant.
A generous $500,000 matching gift doubled every donation, dollar for dollar, until the full match was met, officials said.
Union Rescue Mission is one of the oldest and largest private rescue missions in the nation, dedicated to helping people overcome homelessness. Located in the heart of Downtown L.A’s Skid Row on San Pedro Street, the mission was founded: 1891 as the Pacific Gospel Union by Lyman Stewart, co-founder of Union Oil Company and Biola University.
