Roads turn into rivers at Spanish holiday hotspot after torrential downpours

After 30 litres of rain fell on a city in Spain in just 20 minutes, rivers turned into roads, and locals shouted for help as water knocked them over.
Pedestrians were knocked off their feet, and motorists were overtaken by floating wheelie bins during the downpour in Jaen, Spain.
Footage of the dramatic weather event around 8pm yesterday showed people shouting for help as the cascading water knocked them off their feet and prevented them from getting back up,
A man was pictured being carried down a city street as if he were in the middle of a raging river.
The ferocious storm lifted up paving stones and made cafe and bar terraces where people had been enjoying the sunshine yesterday into flood zones.
The storm only lasted 20 minutes, but caused chaos in Jaen and the surrounding areas.

Police and firefighters received 110 calls about flooding in garages and basements.
Council officials in the city announced a ‘pre-emergency’ phase after the violent downpour, as they worked through the night to try to restore normality.
Around 30 litres of rain fell in just 20 minutes, according to local weather chiefs, and there were power cuts in several areas.

This morning, it was confirmed that no one had been hurt despite the dramatic scenes in the city of 110,000.
One local caught up in the storm said last night: ‘What I’ve just experienced was incredible.”’
Another, Maria del Mar Sanchez, said: ‘I’ve never seen anything like this in my f##king lifetime. Amazing.’
