Robbins mayor grazed during birthday party at Harold’s Chicken restaurant; security fatally shoots gunman

What was supposed to be a birthday celebration at Harold’s Chicken Ice Bar in south suburban Robbins quickly turned chaotic after a gunman opened fire and grazed the village’s mayor before a security guard fatally shot him.

Mayor Darren Bryant was at the restaurant in the 13700 block of South Claire Boulevard to celebrate a Robbins resident’s birthday just after midnight Saturday when the shooter opened fire, grazing Bryant and wounding a DJ, Sean Howard, a village spokesperson said.

A security guard then shot the gunman, identified as 29-year-old Marquelle Rose of Chicago, and he was taken to an area hospital where he died, the Cook County sheriff’s office said.

Bryant was taken to an area hospital for “35 minutes max” and returned to the venue to check on patrons after he was released, according to Howard. The DJ was also taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released.

“He was just there celebrating, awaiting a food order by the way,” Howard said. “[He] was there to shake a few hands and thought he would just be going home.”

It isn’t known how many people were inside the restaurant at the time of the shooting, but village officials say many of the individuals inside were seniors.

The spokesperson noted that Bryant was not the intended target and that the shooting was an isolated incident that “didn’t reflect the progress of Robbins as a town.”

“Robbins had the ugly distinction of being the poorest town in America, and it no longer is,” Howard said. “This is just an isolated incident from a guy from Chicago who tried to cause havoc, but we’re not going to let it impede the progress of the town.”

Anyone with information on the shooting is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s department at 708-865-4896.
