Stewart wins Top Fuel, Hagan captures 1,000th Funny Car race at Winternationals in Pomona

POMONA — Tony Stewart raced to his third career Top Fuel win on Sunday at the NHRA Lucas Oil Winternationals.

Stewart beat Justin Ashley in the Top Fuel final at the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, clocking a pass of 3.683 seconds with a top speed of 332.51 mph. Ashley had a time of 332.51 seconds at 328.54 mph.

Matt Hagan won the Funny Car title by outrunning Ron Capps in the final, and Greg Anderson was the winner in Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson after beating Dallas Glenn.

“Man, you’re going up against the best guy in the class, and not by a little, he’s that bad ass,” Stewart said of Ashley. “To run with him and be close to him and get this thing with a chance to beat him is pretty cool.”Stewart beat Shawn Langdon in the semifinals to advance.

Ashley beat reigning Top Fuel champion Doug Kalitta with a hole shot in the semifinals, winning despite Kalitta breaking a Pomona track record. Recording the fastest speed at 340.56 mph.

The previous record-holder, Brittany Force, set the mark in 2022 with a run of 338.94 mph.

Hagan beat former teammate Ron Capps to win the 1,000th NHRA Funny Car race. Hagan had a time of 3.876 seconds at 330.39 mph. As well as winning the 1,000th Funny Car race, Hagan also collected his 56th Funny Car win.

Hagan’s win was Tony Stewart Racing’s 17th across Top Fuel and Funny Car.

“My boss won the race, we won the race, we won the 2fast2tasty, everything was just amazing,” Hagan said.

In the semifinals, Capps defeated Jordan Vandergriff, while Hagan beat J.R. Todd.

Anderson beat reigning NHRA Pro Stock champion Dale Glenn in their 10th meeting to win the Pro Stock final. Anderson had a time of 6.505 seconds at 209.88 mph for his 112th career win.

“I knew I was gonna have a great hot ride, it’s been great all weekend,” Anderson said.

Anderson also tied John Force’s pro class record for most wins at the Pomona drag strip with 17.

“I just absolutely love this racetrack,” Anderson said. “Every time I come here, the car, like it’s unreal.”

The next NHRA race is the Four-Wide Nationals in Concord, North Carolina, April 23-26.
