Tim Anderson announced his retirement Monday after a 10-year baseball career, and the White Sox will honor him before the game Sept. 17, when the team will wear its original “Southside” City Connect uniforms.
Anderson, 33, made his announcement on a Zoom call, during which he said baseball brought him a lot of good moments but also a lot of pain. He was visibly sweating on the screen and needed to wipe his face.
“Definitely a lot of dark moments,” Anderson said. “Got to a point where I couldn’t enjoy it. You see I’m sweating. I still love the game; it just brought too much pain for me. So going back to play is not for me right now in life.”
The good moments include two All-Star Game appearances (2021, 2022), one Silver Slugger Award (2020) and one American League batting title. They also include one of the most memorable home runs in Sox history, Anderson’s walk-off homer against the Yankees in the 2021 “Field of Dreams” game.
The bad moments came later. His play began to suffer in 2023, when he hit one home run and batted .245. The Sox granted him free agency after the season. He played 65 games for the Marlins in 2024 and 31 for the Angels in 2025.
Also in 2023, he got knocked down in a fight at second base with the Guardians’ Jose Ramirez, and he shared that he had had a child out of wedlock and was working through it with his wife, Bria.
Anderson said the Sox invited him to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at a game this season. That’s when he brought up his plan to retire with the Sox. He said he’s much happier in his post-baseball life.
“I get to wake up every day being happy,” said Anderson, who has a food truck and is working on a clothing line. “Don’t gotta wake up hitting no curveball.”
Smith struck out the side in the second inning before walking the bases loaded in the third and escaping. When the Sox scored four runs in their third, Smith was in line for the win.

Pitching coach Zach Bove said the Sox expect Schultz, whom they optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday, to pitch for them later in the year and hopefully in the playoffs.

Smith is following Davis Martin, who pitched one inning Sunday against the Guardians before the game was delayed by rain.

After trying to play through the rain, the umpires gave up. Before the start of the second inning at Rate Field, they called for the tarp.
