An Illinois Tollway maintenance worker was killed and two others were hurt when they were hit by a driver while filling potholes on I-294 early Saturday, according to Illinois State Police.
The three were making the repairs in the southbound lanes of the tollway near milepost 41.5 in Des Plaines around 4:30 a.m. when the driver hit them, state police said in a statement.
They were taken to a nearby hospital where one of them died. He was identified as Calvin L. Holley, 52, from the Dunning neighborhood, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The conditions of the other two workers was not released.
No charges have been filed against the driver, according to state police.
Holley had been on the job for two years, according to a statement from Illinois Tollway Director Cassaundra Rouse. She said he was a respected and valued member of the team.
Gov. JB Pritzker expressed his condolences in a social media post Saturday.
“May their memory be a blessing, and may we come together to pray for the injured,” he wrote. “Remember to slow down and keep our workers safe.”
