WALNUT CREEK — A 27-year-old transient has been charged with sex crimes following an attempted kidnapping at the downtown library earlier this month, authorities said.
Police arrested the man on April 16, five days after the incident at the library in the 1600 block of North Broadway, according to a statement by Walnut Creek police. Police said he tried to kidnap a seven-year-old child with the intent to harm them.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office has charged the man with two counts of a lewd act upon a child under age 14, and one count of attempted kidnapping for child molestation, according to court records.
He was being held in lieu of $2 million bail at the Martinez Detention Facility on Friday.
According to authorities, the man took the child into a bathroom stall at the library April 11, an act that constituted the attempted kidnapping charge. The child came forward to police, and they later tracked the suspect down, authorities said. Police said the man was a transient familiar to them.
Police said they do not suspect there to be any other victim but encouraged anyone else who may have been victimized by Simon to contact them at 925-943-5844 or through the anonymous tip line at 925-943-5865.
