Trump Slammed for Plan to Send Afghan Allies to Congo, “What Kind of Country Are We?”

Pres. Trump

President Trump is reportedly considering sending approximately 1,100 vetted Afghan allies who aided the U.S. war effort to be resettled in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Afghan allies are currently awaiting U.S. resettlement in Qatar with their families.

The New York Times reported Tuesday: “A U.S. aid worker said that the Afghans, who were evacuated to Qatar, would face a choice between moving to the Democratic Republic of Congo and living under the Taliban.” (The Afghans — 400 of them are reportedly children — are being housed at a former U.S. military base in Qatar.)

Former U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica, Luis Moreno, responded to the report: “What kind of country are we?”

Former chief of staff to U.S. Ambassador Gary Locke at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, Jim Sciutto, also reacted: “I’ve met many of these Afghan vets – both in Afghanistan and here in the U.S. – as have many lawmakers from both parties. They risked their lives alongside U.S. forces and believed the U.S. would honor its commitments. This is a stunning blow to this community.”

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) said the idea was “insane,” and added: “We told these Afghans that we would help ensure their safety after they helped us. We have an obligation to follow through on our promise because it’s the right thing to do, and because going back on our word will only make it harder for us to build the kinds of partnerships we may need to advance our national security in the future.”
