THE Met Office has warned of a freezing cold night with snow as temperatures plunge to 1C – but there’s sunshine to come.

A map released by forecasters shows how the mercury could plunge to one degree above freezing point in parts of Scotland tonight.

The temperature map predicts a low of 1C at the Dalwhinnie whisky distillery in Speyside at 3am.

Scotland will also be dusted with snow overnight, and a salvo of hail is forecast for much of the UK.

But today will be breezy with a mix of sunny spells and scattered blustery showers.

Eight red flood warnings and 65 amber flood alerts are in place across England, the Environment Agency said.

Groundwater flooding is possible in parts of Dorset and Wiltshire, and there is a chance of tidal floods in the Norfolk Broads.

The afternoon will be mostly dry for Wales and south west England, forecasters said.

But it will be chilly in all parts of the UK, especially down the east coast.

Tonight will be cold with showers in Wales and eastern Scotland and dry spells elsewhere.

It will be breezy down the east coast, with some patchy grass frost in the north.

Tomorrow will also see a blend of sunny spells, scattered showers and light winds.

Some cloud patchy rain will arrive in Northern Ireland before pushing southwards across the UK on Thursday.

The weekend will be more settled, with sunny spells and warmer weather from Friday onwards.

Breezy down the east coast. Patchy grass frost in the north.

Wednesday

Sunny spells and some scattered showers, with winds lighter than of late, although still breezy on the east coast.

Patchy rain arriving in Northern Ireland.

Thursday to Saturday

Rather cloudy on Thursday with light rain spreading south.

Settled conditions developing from Friday with some sunny spells especially in the west and temperatures increasing.
