In the morning hours of Tuesday, April 7, 2026, a security scare caused significant concern after a man thwarted security measures to trespass onto the course in Georgia ahead of The 2026 Masters at August National golf tournament this weekend.
Given that the Masters brings together the world’s best golfers, many fans clamor at their change to watch the competition live – while many, many, many others tune in from home. However, one man decided earlier today that he wanted to touch the green himself. Instead, he found himself in handcuffs and escorted off of Augusta National towards an arrest booking.
Here’s what to know about this unfolding security threat just days ahead of golf’s pinnacle tournament.
36-Year-Old Man Arrested at August National Ahead of 2026 Masters Tournament

Tuesday morning’s trespasser at Augusta National has been identified as 36-year-old Matthew Stroud from Easley, South Carolina, according to Golf Digest. At the time of his arrest, documentation explains that the man was on the property approaching guests, patrons, and club members on site and asking for their tickets to the 2026 Masters Tournament this weekend.
After Richmond County Sheriff’s Deputies asked Stroud to leave the presmises, he did so temporarily but quickly returned to Augusta National. When he re-entered the private club property without permission to be present nor any official affiliation with the club, deputies arrested him on charges of criminal trespassing and booked him into the Charles B. Webster Detentsion Center.

Augusta National in Georgia isn’t just a golf course. Rather, it is a meticulously controlled environment. Founded in 1933 and having hosted the Masters Tournament annually since 1934, the venue is known for its exclusivity and rigid enforcement of rules. In the days leading up to the Masters, security at August National is among the tightest in all of sports – and for good reason as realized earlier today.
The private club which permanently operates from August National hosts golf’s most prestigious event, so strict security measures that closely monitor access, behavior, and movement throughout the property are paramount to the success of putting on the annual premier competition. Beyond securing the physical grounds of the club’s property, security measures also extend to restricting resale tickets as practices surrounding the resale of entry passes has become increasingly problematic with resellers going to great lengths to earn revenues of up to tens of thousands of dollars on each resold ticket. As a result, there are extremely stringent rules in place for Masters Tournament badges, and Stroud’s actions of approaching private patrons on the August National property and asking for their badges unprompted and without permission to be on site is a huge violation of the club’s heightened security measures ahead of this week.
