Report: Former Bills First Round Pick Agrees to Deal With Chiefs

The rivalry between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs has grown significantly over the past few seasons. Since 2020, the two teams have faced off four times in the postseason, showcasing the talents of two of the NFL’s best quarterbacks: Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.

Although a new rivalry has developed between Kansas City and Buffalo, the two teams continue to do business with each other, making trades and signing free agents who have played for the opposing team. This was evident with the Chiefs’ actions on Thursday.

Former Bills Cornerback Kaiir Elam is Heading to The Chiefs

According to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, the Chiefs agreed to a deal with former Buffalo Bills cornerback Kaiir Elam.

The Bills selected Elam in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but his stint in Buffalo didn’t go as hoped. Over three seasons with the Bills, Elam started only 12 games in 29 appearances.

Last offseason, the Bills traded Elam to the Dallas Cowboys. Bills general manager Brandon Beane took responsibility for drafting Elam and expressed his regret over the decision.

“Ultimately, it’s on me,” said Beane, addressing reporters following the first wave of free agency, on May 19, via Bills On SI’s Ralph Ventre. “I made the selection that didn’t work out, and I own that. You don’t want those to happen but man, I’m rooting for Kaiir, I really am.”

Elam didn’t last long with the Cowboys, as Dallas released him in mid-November, and the Tennessee Titans picked him up.

It will be interesting to see how Elam plays with the Chiefs, and there is a good chance he might only be a camp body.

Buffalo And Kansas City Have Already Made a Few Big Trades

The Bills and Chiefs have made a few big moves with each other over the past few seasons, and the biggest one was for Kansas City to land Mahomes.

As the 2017 NFL Draft approached, there was a chance that Kansas City would look to move up in the first round to secure a quarterback, and that’s exactly what it did.
Kansas City, originally holding the No. 27 pick, made a bold move by trading three selections to Buffalo to climb up to No. 10 and secure Mahomes.

The trade is something the Bills would likely want to revisit, even though they ultimately selected Allen in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Had the Chiefs not secured Mahomes, it’s quite possible the Bills would have already reached a Super Bowl with Allen at the helm, and they might even have a Super Bowl trophy to show for it.

During the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bills and Chiefs orchestrated a significant trade, with Buffalo sending the No. 28 pick to Kansas City. The Chiefs then selected wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Meanwhile, Buffalo decided to trade down twice, ultimately choosing wide receiver Keon Coleman at No. 33.

If the Bills had stayed at No. 28, they could’ve had Worthy, which could’ve made Buffalo’s offense even better.
