UConn freshman Braylon Mullins became an unexpected star with his last-second shot to beat Duke in the Elite Eight, leading to a rush of attention on the team’s budding young star.
Mullins has some help from his girlfriend, Kylee, who earned a shout-out in a profile released before the NCAA Tournament started.
Braylon Mullins Leaning on Girlfriend During College Career
As CT Insider noted, Mullins had some help adjusting to his first year at college from his girlfriend.
“Mullins is joined by two other freshmen with a chance to crack the rotation, Tasmanian guard Jacob Furphy and German center Eric Reibe, with forward Jacob Ross more of a long-term project,” the report noted. ‘Mullins is the headliner, a celebrated high school player from the Midwest. He arrives with all the hype â and his girlfriend, Kylee.”
The report added that Mullins and his girlfriend were actually rivals in high school, but now ended up at Storrs together as he embarked on his college basketball career.
“She attended a rival Indiana high school and will enroll at UConn later this month,” the report noted. “Having Kylee around will be comforting, Mullins said. So much else around him is new. Heâs got a baby face and big-time potential to do adult basketball things right away. Heâs not afraid to shoot, of course. Heâs not afraid to learn. Heâs not afraid of the spotlight.”
There was not more information available about Mullins’ girlfriend, as the UConn freshman has kept a relatively low profile amid the Huskies’ run to the Final Four.
Mullins told the outlet that he was expecting some growing pains in his first year of college basketball, but was already used to it from his time in high school.
âI kind of dealt with that back home, so Iâve kind of gotten used to it, but itâs a different level,â he said. âThere are going to be ups and downs in the road, but Iâm honestly looking forward to it because there is always room to grow in basketball. Just being able to understand the concept of what this place is, and you can see it on the walls.â
Braylon Mullins and Girlfriend Could Be Leaving UConn Soon
Mullins may not have much time left at UConn, with projections that the freshman will head straight to the NBA after this season. While it’s not clear if Kylee will join him as she did after high school, Mullins appears to have a bright future in professional basketball ahead of him.
USA Today’s Bryan Kalbrosky projected that Mullins would land with the Cleveland Cavaliers with the No. 29 overall pick in the first round. Kalbrosky noted that Mullins recovered well from an ankle injury that left him out of the early part of this season.
“He is a useful off-ball threat, which gives him an immediately practical role at the next level,” Kalbrosky wrote. “The Big East All-Freshman wing shot 40.7 percent on 3-pointers during his first 18 games in the starting lineup, but it may be tough for scouts to forget his 0-for-8 performance from beyond the arc during his first game in March Madness.”
