A Chicagoan has died from West Nile, and is among the first two human cases this year, the city’s department of health announced Tuesday.
The Illinois Department of Public Health has also confirmed several additional cases of the virus in the state of Illinois.
The Chicago Department of Public Health did not identify the person who died.
“2026 has seen the rainiest summer in Chicago in years, giving mosquitoes ample opportunities to breed,” city Public Health Commissioner Garth Walker said in a statement. “The best way to protect yourself from West Nile virus is to avoid mosquito bites and take measures to stop them from breeding around your home.”
Late last month, the Cook County Department of Public Health reported the first four cases of West Nile virus in suburban Cook County this year and urged residents to take precautions against mosquito bites.
The virus has been the No. 1 cause of mosquito-borne disease in the U.S. since its emergence in 1999, according to the city’s public health department. The department advises Chicagoans to wear repellent regularly (after sunscreen application), remove any standing water around the home and consult healthcare providers about destination-specific risks before traveling.
