A second measles case has been confirmed in Kane County weeks after the area’s first confirmed case, according to health officials.
The person was vaccinated against measles and in contact with the first case, which was reported Aug. 24, according to the Kane County Health Department.
While a vaccine protects against measles, breakthrough cases, where a vaccinated person can get measles, still occur, health officials said. People who are vaccinated and develop measles are generally less likely to experience severe illness or complications and may be less likely to transmit the virus.
The first confirmed case in Kane County included two possible exposure locations:
- Kaneland High School in Maple Park on Aug. 18, 2026 during the school day.
- Next Generation Pediatric Clinic in South Elgin on Aug, 21, 2026 between 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
As of Tuesday, there were 11 reported measles cases in the state, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
