Southern California residents may want to keep an umbrella handy this Halloween, as forecasters monitor another potential round of rain that could arrive just in time for trick-or-treating.
A low-pressure system approaching the West Coast could bring showers to the region as early as Thursday, Oct. 29, with rain chances increasing over Halloween weekend, according to the National Weather Service. The holiday falls on a Saturday this year.
“There’s a general consensus that there will be some precipitation that weekend,” National Weather Service meteorologist Sam Zuber said on Friday, Oct. 23.
However, it remains unclear whether the incoming system will move far enough south to bring rain to Los Angeles and Orange counties and the Inland Empire, Zuber said.
The system would typically take about 36 hours to pass through the region, she said, making its timing another factor in whether Halloween festivities could be affected.
In Orange County and the Inland Empire, the probability of measurable rainfall ranges from 35% to 45% on Saturday, Oct. 31, increasing to 40% to 50% on Sunday, Nov. 1, according to a forecast discussion issued Friday by the weather service’s San Diego office.
In Los Angeles County, forecasters also are monitoring the potential for rain, although the timing remains uncertain.
“All I can say is that there may be some rain Saturday night,” National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Wofford said, referring to Halloween evening.
The potential return of wet weather comes on the heels of a storm system that brought scattered showers, thunderstorms and localized flooding to Southern California earlier this week.
