CD Projekt’s sci-fi epic looks better than ever on console thanks to a new PS5 Pro update, with three new graphical modes.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been drastically transformed in the six years since its infamously messy launch in 2020, with bug patches, the Phantom Liberty expansion, and many new features.

While developer CD Projekt has finished releasing major updates (or so it says) for the sci-fi role player, as it ramps up production on the sequel, a free new update has been rolled out today on PS5 Pro, which promises to significantly improve its visuals.

As outlined in a PlayStation Blog post, the update boasts 4K visuals and advanced ray tracing support, along with three new graphical settings.

For fidelity obsessives, the biggest selling point might be Ray Tracing Pro mode, which promises the ‘most visually advanced version of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro’. This includes ray-traced reflections, ambient occlusion, emissive lighting, and other improvements while targeting 40fps on variable refresh rate-enabled displays or 30fps on others.

Along with Performance mode, which reaches up to 90fps at a lower graphical fidelity, there is Ray Tracing mode which is designed to hit a sweet spot between both. This promises certain ray tracing improvements while maintaining 60fps.

After it was previously announced last month, this update also includes support for Sony’s newly improved upscaler PSSR 2.0 (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), after the previous version delivered mixed results across different games.

In a video by tech experts Digital Foundry, the update was described as ‘pretty good on the whole’ with some ‘minor quibbles’ – mostly related to fluctuations in the frame rate at times, across the new modes.

While CD Projekt is working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, the studio’s next game will be The Witcher 4. It’s expected to launch sometime in 2027, but before that, rumours point to some new DLC for The Witcher 3 coming out this year.

Beyond PlayStation consoles, Cyberpunk 2077 is available across Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
