Jodie Foster, 63, Spotted Using a Cane During Rare Outing

Jodie Foster was recently spotted during a rare public outing — and fans quickly noticed an unexpected detail.

The Oscar-winning actress, 63, was photographed using a cane while out on a grocery run with wife Alexandra Hedison in New York City, marking one of Foster’s uncommon appearances in public.

All About Foster’s NYC Outing

The “Silence of the Lambs” star appeared to have her hands full during the daytime outing, carrying several shopping bags while making stops along the way. 

According to photos published by the Daily Mail, Foster appeared to pause multiple times, at moments leaning on the cane as she navigated the city streets.

At one point during the outing, Foster reportedly called for Hedison’s assistance.

For the casual trip, Foster kept her look simple and understated, wearing green pants paired with a white T-shirt and a denim button-up shirt.

Hedison opted for black pants and a brown jacket.

It remains unclear why Foster was using a cane, and no explanation has been publicly given.

Foster Is Incredibly Private

The sighting comes as Foster continues to maintain a notably private lifestyle despite decades in Hollywood.

Though one of the most celebrated actresses of her generation, Foster has long made an effort to keep her personal life out of the spotlight — particularly when it comes to her family.

The actress shares two sons, Charlie Foster and Christopher “Kit” Bernard Foster, and has previously spoken openly about wanting them to experience as normal an upbringing as possible.

Speaking to “The View” hosts in 2024, Foster explained why she worked hard to separate her Hollywood career from motherhood, per Page Six.

“I wanted them to know me as their mom and the person who went away to work and stuff,” Foster said.

She even joked that one of her sons misunderstood what she actually did for a living.

“I brought [Charlie] to set one day and I bought him a little plastic tool belt and stuff,” she recalled. “And I was like, ‘Yeah, and this is this set and this set and this set.’ And for a really long time, he thought I was a construction worker.”

Though her sons largely stay out of public view, they have made a few rare appearances alongside their mother in recent months.

Foster Occasionally Brings Her Sons to Award Shows

Charlie joined Foster at the 2025 SAG Awards, while younger son Kit accompanied her to the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, where Foster won best performance by a female actor in a limited series, anthology series or television movie for “True Detective: Night Country.”

During her emotional acceptance speech, Foster gave a heartfelt shoutout to both sons.

“Kit, my scientist son, and Charlie, my actor son,” she said.

“Hopefully you understand the joy, such joy, that comes from doing really hard, meaningful, good work,” Foster added.

The actress has also reflected on how rewarding it has been watching her sons grow into adulthood.

Speaking backstage with ABC News following the Emmys, Foster shared that seeing her sons discover purpose in their own lives has been especially meaningful.

“They’re at that time in their life — I have a 23-year-old and a 26-year-old — that’s so rewarding for me,” she said.

“But I think they’re starting to really love life and find the joy in doing something meaningful,” Foster continued. “And they want to be a part of something meaningful, and that sort of spiritual impulse is what really makes great art.”

For now, Foster appears to be continuing life quietly, keeping a low profile even as public interest in the actress remains strong.
