In an exclusive interview with People, the multi-hyphenated star just spilled some secrets about how she keeps her marriage going.

Why Communication and Shared Values Matter Most

“That’s where you download everything,” Wilson joyfully revealed to People.

“That’s where you download the day. You laugh about what you’re doing. In the mornings, you’re thinking about, ‘What are you doing today? Where are you going to be? Great, I want you there.’”

What may sound like a simple, everyday ritual carries deeper meaning for Wilson, who sees those shared moments as the foundation of connection.

She said honest communication and a strong sense of shared values have played a key role in sustaining their relationship over time.

“You have to be able to communicate to each other the things that are changing in your life — and also the things that are still staying the same so that you’re always working together for the greater good,” she said in the same interview.

For Wilson, that steady exchange of support and understanding has helped their partnership remain grounded through every stage of life.

The One Rule That Keeps Their Relationship Strong

Nearly four decades into their marriage, Wilson said one guiding principle has remained at the center of it all, shaping how they face even the hardest moments together.

“You never go to bed mad,” Wilson tells People. “I heard that early, early on, and I thought, ‘That’s actually really good.’”

She added, “You don’t want to wake up in the morning and have that lingering feeling. So whatever it is, resolve it before you go to bed.”

For Wilson, that rule has become more than advice. It is a daily choice that has helped them work through disagreements with intention, keeping their bond strong and grounded through the years.

A Love That Grows Through Time

Wilson’s new album, “Sound of a Woman,” captures the emotional depth that comes with long-term love, drawing in part from her relationship with Hanks.

“You’re not the same person you were when you got married,” she said. “Who you are physically, who you are emotionally, spiritually is very different than who you are 10 years later, 20 years later, 30 years later.”

For Wilson, that evolution is not something to fear but something to embrace, a reminder that lasting relationships are built on growth.

“I still look at my husband, and I still see him the way we were when we were 20,” Wilson added. “But at the same time, I know that we’re not, and I’m so grateful for that huge chunk of time that we’ve had together.”

Hanks and Wilson first met on the set of ABC’s sitcom “Bosom Buddies” in 1981.

Though they were just friends at the time, as Hanks was married to his college sweetheart, Samantha Lewes, the two later reconnected and went public with their relationship in 1986.

After two years of dating, Hanks and Wilson married in 1988 and went on to welcome two sons together, Chester “Chet” Hanks and Truman Theodore Hanks.

The “Forrest Gump” actor is also a father to Colin Hanks and Elizabeth Hanks from his previous marriage to Lewes, who died of bone cancer in 2002.
