Taylor Swift’s silence over Trump post leaves fans furious

Taylor Swift is facing mounting pressure from her own fans after the White House appeared to appropriate her Eras Tour branding over the July 4 weekend – with many questioning why the famously litigious pop superstar has yet to publicly respond.

As America became consumed by celebrations surrounding Swift’s wedding to Travis Kelce, President Donald Trump’s social media team repeatedly inserted itself into the conversation with a series of Swift-inspired posts.

On Thursday, the official White House X account shared an image titled ‘America’s Eras Tour’, featuring Trump surrounded by historic figures including George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in a design closely resembling the promotional artwork for Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour.

‘It’s been a long time coming…,’ the account wrote, borrowing a lyric from Swift’s song Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince.

Then, after news broke that Swift and Kelce had married on Friday evening, the White House posted again.

As digital billboards outside Madison Square Garden celebrated the couple with the message ‘JUST&T MARRIED!’, the administration shared an edited version reading ‘Trump is your president’ alongside the gleeful caption: ‘IT’S HAPPENED!!!’

The posts quickly went viral, but the conversation soon shifted away from Trump himself and onto Swift’s silence.

Across X, fans began questioning why one of the music industry’s most fiercely protective artists had yet to challenge what many saw as an unauthorised use of her branding.

‘Isn’t it odd that a woman who’s built her career around being relentless for copyrighting and licensing her likeness and music is now suddenly silent on this plagiarised version of her tour poster, and has been for three whole days now,’ one person wrote.

Another posted: ‘I wonder why the woman who struck copyright on Olivia for yelling a chorus and sued anyone who uses her image or likeness in any way is now silent on this?’

A third joked: ‘Taylor’s trademark lawyer like “can a girl get a weekend off to enjoy a wedding”.’

Others were far less sympathetic.

‘The billionaire Republican who used to sue people for making embroidery or T-shirts with her phrases for “infringing on intellectual property” is perfectly fine with the White House and Donald Trump using them,’ one viral post read.

Another wrote: ‘She sued Olivia Rodrigo for much less btw LOL.’

While the exact details of Swift’s dispute with Rodrigo have never been publicly confirmed, and there’s no evidence of a lawsuit, the controversy surrounding Deja Vu has lingered for years.

Rodrigo’s 2021 hit was retroactively updated to credit Swift, Jack Antonoff, and St Vincent as co-writers after the singer had spoken openly about being inspired by the shouted bridge in Cruel Summer.

Although there has never been confirmation that Swift personally demanded the songwriting credits, the move sparked widespread speculation and contributed to persistent rumours of a rift between the two artists.

Rodrigo recently addressed those rumours on The New York Times’ Popcast more directly than ever before.

She was asked if there’s now a ‘frost’ between herself and Swift. ‘I don’t know,’ she replied, after taking a breath.

‘I think I tried to not let it, like, get to me or upset me. I think I just try to keep it trucking. I think there’s no… it was so long ago, there’s no use in, like, harping on it, and yeah, I just try to make songs that I love and try to be kind and good to other people and supportive of other people, and I’ve always like tried to be like that, and at the end of the day, I think that’s that’s all you can do.’

The latest online discourse also comes as Swift fans say they’re ‘sickened’ by news that an ICE contractor attended her wedding.

The star-studded ceremony, which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York, was packed out with their celebrity pals, including Hugh GrantBradley CooperGraham Norton, and Cara Delevingne.

It appears that Steven J. Demetriou, the Executive Chair of a company called Amentum Services was also among the crowd. Amentum Services is currently the sole contractor for ICE’s Camp East Montana, a detention centre in El Paso that has faced accusations of inhumane treatment of the immigrants detained there.

Sharing their thoughts on a Reddit thread, commenters included Captain_Cupcake03, who described the wedding as ‘absolutely grotesque and out of touch.’

Wrote Relevant-Peach3997: ‘Travis and Taylor are responsible for their guests. It’s their wedding.’

‘You are the company you keep,’ said hellawhitegirl, while Round_Patience3029 asked: ‘Taylor is a closet republican now?’

Describing it as ‘sickening,’ breyness added: ‘So you have a space with republicans and don’t use it to speak out on their ways but to invite them to your wedding? Worst part, she’s untouchable.’

The renewed criticism of Swift also comes after a string of artists publicly condemned the Trump administration for using their music or imagery without permission.

Beyoncé’s label reportedly issued a cease-and-desist after Trump’s campaign used Freedom during the 2024 election.

Last year, Sabrina Carpenter blasted the White House after officials paired her song Juno with footage of ICE arrests, writing: ‘This video is evil and disgusting. Do not ever involve me or my music to benefit your inhumane agenda.’

Olivia Rodrigo also publicly criticised the administration after officials used All-American Bitch in a deportation-related social media post, writing: ‘Don’t ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda.’

SZA similarly accused the White House of ‘rage baiting artists for free promo’ after one of her songs appeared in another immigration video.

Swift herself has been clear about her political views in the past.

Following the first presidential debate in September 2024, she endorsed Kamala Harris on Instagram, calling her ‘a steady-handed, gifted leader’ and saying she was voting for the Democrat because Harris ‘fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion.’

She also accused Trump of fuelling misinformation after AI-generated images falsely depicting her as a Trump supporter were shared online.

‘It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,’ she wrote at the time.

Trump later responded by saying he was ‘not a Taylor Swift fan’ and claimed she would ‘pay the price in the marketplace’ for endorsing Harris.

Whether Swift intends to respond to the White House’s latest use of her imagery remains to be seen, and she admittedly was pretty busy getting married this weekend, so may not have even seen the post yet.

For now, though, it’s not Trump’s social media team asking questions – it’s many of Swift’s own fans, who believe one of pop music’s most protective artists should have something to say.
