1 killed, 6 injured in shooting at illegal street takeover in Carson

One man was killed and six other people injured in a shooting during an illegal street takeover in Carson over the weekend, authorities said.

The violence occurred in the area of Charles Willard Street and Harmon Avenue, a stretch lined with large commercial buildings on the east side of the city, around 3 a.m. Sunday, June 28, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies found three men suffering from gunshot wounds, Lt. Steve De Jong said. Two were taken to hospitals in critical condition, while the third died at the scene.

Investigators learned four others with gunshot wounds got themselves to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, De Jong said.

A woman, who declined to provide her name, told KTLA that she was standing next to the shooter when “he started walking toward a victim and started shooting at him. That’s when I started running, and after that I heard four more shots going on.”

“He’s kind of like going crazy with his hand movement, so that’s when I decided to start running,” she said.

Another woman, who declined to provide her name, told the station one victim was a close friend.

She attempted to control the bleeding, she said.

“I called 911,” she said. “I was literally asking everybody to help me pick him up.”

Two other friends were also struck by gunfire, she said, with one having undergone surgery after a bullet lodged in his spine.

“There were numerous onlookers present, and investigators are urging anyone who was at the takeover to come forward with any information,” De Jong said.
