Neither Tyson Bagent nor Caleb Williams would have practiced Thursday if the Bears held one.
Case Keenum was the only healthy quarterback on the Bears’ 53-man roster when they submitted their first injury report Thursday. The report was estimated, as the Bears didn’t practice.
The Bears have other injury issues. Kicker Cairo Santos would not have practiced because of a right hip issue. Neither would running back Kyle Monangai, who has a knee injury. Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson (hamstring) and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett (rest) would have sat out, too.
Santos being hampered would be a blow to an offense that managed three points last week. The Bears don’t have a backup kicker and would have to add one during the week if they decide he’s unlikely to play.
Bagent took over for Williams when the latter pulled his hamstring Sunday. He reported concussion symptoms Tuesday morning and was put into the league’s five-step protocol. He did not go to Halas Hall on Wednesday. Players are allowed to practice while in the concussion protocol — the Vikings’ Kyler Murray did three times last week but was not cleared to face the Bears.
Williams won’t practice all week, coach Ben Johnson said. He wouldn’t rule Williams out for Monday’s game, but it seems unlikely the Bears would rush him back.
Miller Moss, who spent training camp with the team and re-signed the day before its opener, is on the practice squad and will likely promoted to the active roster on Monday.
Defensive lineman Shemar Turner and linebacker Noah Sewell, who returned to practice off the physically-unable-to-perform list Wednesday, were limited. They can’t play in games until Week 5.
The Bears also re-signed long snapper Beau Gardner to the practice squad two days after cut him. Receiver Scotty Miller, the Barrington High School alum and former Super Bowl champ, was cut to make room.
