LA Daily News high school football: Week 2 previews and predictions

Calabasas will host Burbank in one of the top high school football games in the LA Daily News area in Week 2 of the season.

Who will come out on top?

Here is a look at the Week 2 games and our predictions:

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

(Games start at 7 p.m. unless noted.)

Burbank (1-1) at Calabasas (2-0). Friday

Burbank looks to bounce back from losing to Centennial of Las Vegas, 74-41. Last week became an uphill climb for Burbank, which got burned on special teams on three separate occasions. Burbank trailed 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and couldn’t recover. Senior quarterback Damian Corona completed 19 of 44 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 95 yards on just 10 carries. Burbank is matched up with another explosive offense in Calabasas, which beat Alemany on a last-second touchdown catch in Week 0 before an impressive win, 27-13, over Rio Mesa last week. UCLA commit Kingston Celifie leads Calabasas alongside senior quarterback Dominick Hardy and wide receiver Korbin Thomas, who has 12 catches, 240 yards and three touchdowns. Expect a shootout with Calabasas coming out on top.

Prediction: Calabasas wins 49-35.

St. Francis (0-1) at Crespi (1-1), Friday

Crespi hosts St. Francis after bouncing back from its season-opening loss to Notre Dame by beating Golden Valley 38-7 last week. Sophomore quarterback Chase Curren continues to flourish and completed 22 of 31 passes for 291 yards and four touchdowns while linebacker/defensive end Nico Sanchez finished with six tackles and two forced fumbles. St. Francis looks to disrupt Crespi’s momentum. Senior defensive lineman Matthew Chase made six tackles, including a sack against Alta Loma. St. Francis is looking to build its program under first-year head coach and former Muir leader Lance Mitchell. St. Francis has a strong defensive foundation but is not good enough to handle this high-powered Crespi offense.

Prediction: Crespi wins 28-7.

Agoura (1-1) at Thousand Oaks (1-1), Friday

Agoura looks to rebound from its 38-7 loss on the road to Westlake while Thousand Oaks is coming off its first win of the season against Hueneme 27-20. Thousand Oaks sophomore Matthew Galvez displayed poise from the pocket and completed 14 of 21 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns, while senior Lincoln Mayling rushed for 105 yards on 25 carries. Senior linebacker Jasper Metz and linebacker Lance Levin each had four tackles, including two TFLs. and a sack. But can Thousand Oaks contain Agoura senior running back George Hastings and quarterback Kris Carranza? One position decides this one in a physical affair dictated at the line of scrimmage.

Prediction: Agoura wins 17-10.
