Officers spotted the vehicle in the area of San Vicente and Beverly boulevards and attempted a traffic stop, but the pickup took off, police said. The pursuit ended when the driver collided into a second vehicle around Burton Way and Robertson Boulevard and officers surrounded it.
As of 5:30 p.m., the standoff continued with patrol cars and a police Bearcat armored vehicle surrounding the pickup and a sun shield set inside the truck’s front window.
Officials told KCAL that the suspect struggled with deputies who tried to detain him near 106th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard in the Lennox area and he injured one deputy as he fled in his truck.
LASD reported the suspect was wanted for attempted murder and had a hostage inside the truck.
LASD Deputy Tracy Koerner told City News Service the attempted murder charge stemmed from the suspect attempting to hit a deputy with the pickup truck during the attempted stop in Lennox. “The suspect is armed and is holding a hostage inside a vehicle,” the LASD said. “The suspect is wanted for additional charges in the city of @cityofbevhills.”
Officers attempted to negotiate in hopes the suspect will get out of the vehicle, police said.
LASD says the suspect released the hostage just before 11 p.m. Sunday. Koerner said she did not suffer any apparent injuries.
The LASD announced about 6:30 p.m. Sunday it had sent deputies from its Special Enforcement Bureau to take over tactical command.
NBC 4 reported police used flash grenades in an effort to coax the suspect into surrendering.
The suspect was finally arrested after midnight, according to the BHPD.
” The hostage is in custody, and the roadway is now open, “a spokesman with the BHPD said.
The deputy suffered minor injuries after he was struck by the pickup, Koerner said.
