People evacuated and building on fire after ‘explosion’ in central Nottingham

A large fire has broken out in central Nottingham, with social media users reporting hearing an explosion.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said there was an ongoing incident at a commercial building on Curzon Street.

The street runs alongside student accommodation, near the city’s Victoria shopping centre.

Evacuations from neighbouring buildings are now taking place, Nottinghamshire Police said.

A spokesperson for the fire service said a call had been received at 11.23am, and 10 pumps were attending the incident.

In a statement posted on social media, the police said the fire was in a derelict building.

It said: ‘Police and fire crews are currently at the scene, and a number of cordons will be place around Huntingdon Street and Curzon Street.

‘The cause of the fire is not yet known. There are no reports of any injuries.

‘As a precaution, we are looking at evacuating a number of properties on the street.’
