South Shore Line continues holiday train schedule through Friday after Indiana freight train derailment

South Shore Line trains continue to run on a holiday schedule through Friday after a June 24 freight train derailment and power loss near East Chicago, Ind.

The Lakeshore Corridor and Monon Corridor will maintain a holiday train schedule through July 3, according to a South Shore Line service update. July 4 and 5 will remain holiday service as previously scheduled.

A temporary shuttle service, in effect between the Miller and Hegewisch stations, will continue through Sunday, the update said.

The temporary service changes stem from a June 24 freight train derailment and power loss that happened near East Chicago and Gary, Ind., according to South Shore Line. All South Shore Line train service had been suspended following the derailment, with service resuming June 25 on a holiday schedule.

Partial service was restored to the Monon Corridor on Thursday, and both corridors reopened Friday using a holiday schedule, including busing between Miller and Hegewisch stations.

Buses will make all station stops. Bikes are not allowed on the buses, South Shore Line said.

Metra will continue to accept South Shore Line tickets for passengers who use Metra Electric District train service, according to the alert.
