Three positions to watch when Bears host Browns in preseason opener Saturday

Three positions to watch when the Bears host the Browns at noon Saturday at Soldier Field:

Left tackle

With Braxton Jones out with a knee injury, the Bears will start Kiran Amegadjie and have him alternate quarters with Jedrick Wills.

If he is healthy, Jones is the favorite to win the job. Saturday is a big opportunity for Wills, a former Browns first-round pick, and Amegadjie to improve their standing.

‘‘There are too many things that are just not being done well enough,’’ offensive line coach Dan Roushar said.

Wide receiver

If the absences of Luther Burden and Zavion Thomas have made the wide-receiver room slower, coach Ben Johnson hasn’t felt it. That’s a credit to United Football League alum Kaden Davis, whom Johnson said ‘‘has made plays almost every single day,’’ and veteran Scotty Miller.

The two are competing for the Bears’ sixth wide-receiver spot.

Defensive tackle

The Bears have tried to get rookie Jordan van den Berg, a sixth-round pick, to slow down in practice. His physicality, however, has earned him reps with the first team.

‘‘I play with violence,’’ he said.

For the first time Saturday, the Bears will see how that translates to game action.

With Braxton Jones out with a knee injury, the Bears will start left tackle Kiran Amegadjie and have him alternate quarters with Jedrick Wills.
In 2019, Large tore a hamstring — and an egg-shaped piece of his pelvic bone along with it — in a scrimmage before the start of his senior high school season. He spent 35 days on bed rest and wondered what would become of his football career.
Bears coach Ben Johnson said not only will Williams sit out Saturday vs. the Browns, but he could hold him out of the other two preseason games as well.
