President Trump told a rally in Perry, Georgia, on Saturday that the country is “making a freaking fortune” from oil, as national gas prices sit around $4.29 a gallon. He said his advisers had told him not to say it.
Trump said: “We’re making money like we’ve never made before. They’ll say: President Trump is bragging about all the money they’re making while people are suffering at the pump. I don’t give a damn. We’re making a freaking fortune.”

Trump also said the U.S. oil and gas industry is making “hundreds of billions of dollars,” and that his people told him: “Please don’t mention that, sir, because people are paying a little higher.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom posted, quoting the clip: “Congratulations to Big Oil on their very successful, record-profits presidency.”

David Axelrod, a former Obama adviser, posted: “Give @POTUS credit for leveling with the American people. HE’s making money like he’s never made before. And he doesn’t give a damn about high gas prices. (Not a great closing message, though.)”

The New Yorker staff writer Susan Glasser called it “like the epigraph for the entire Trump 2.0 presidency.” Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) posted Sunday night that there is “no slogan more fitting for this White House.”

[NOTE: Trump said of oil companies in August: “They made too much money, too much money,” IBTimes reported. Gas is more than $1 a gallon higher than a year ago, per IBTimes. The remark came at the same rally where Trump said he would not refuse requests for federal aid from Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) if he is re-elected, though Trump immediately added that he probably shouldn’t have said so.]
