Update: Beach hazards statement affecting Los Angeles County beaches until early Monday morning

Catalina/Santa Barbara Islands, Malibu, Los Angeles County Beaches and Ventura County Beaches are included in an updated beach hazards statement issued by the National Weather Service on Saturday at 1:02 p.m. The statement is in effect until Monday Sept. 28, at 5 a.m.

“Dangerous rip currents and breaking waves due to elevated surf,” can be expected according to the NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. “Areas of most concern are Avalon, Long Beach (Peninsula and Belmont Shore). While the surf will likely be smaller than Marie (from earlier this month), the lingering erosion effects enhances the vulnerabilities for locally more significant coastal flooding.”

“Moderate flooding of sea water is likely over some vulnerable low-lying coastal areas, especially around the time of high tide, including over beach parking lots, bike paths, and harbor walkways. Moderate to locally significant beach erosion is likely. Very localized damage possible to most vulnerable areas. There is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore,” according to the NWS. “Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Do NOT drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks. Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers.
