Wind gusts cause over 500 flight delays, cancellations Tuesday at Denver International Airport

More than 500 flights were delayed or canceled Tuesday at Denver International Airport as gusty winds continue to cause travel concerns.

As of 8 a.m., 520 flights had been delayed and 33 were canceled because of high winds, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware. More than half of the delays are inbound flights delayed at their origin for an average of 1 hour and 50 minutes. FlightAware does not yet have the average length of outbound or airborne delays.

Between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Tuesday, 28 flights were delayed and three were canceled, according to live flight tracking by FlightAware’s MiseryMap.SkyWest

Airlines that have delayed or canceled flights include Southwest, United, SkyWest, CommuteAir, Delta, Lufthansa, Frontier, JetBlue and American and Alaska Airlines.

New regional airline SkyWest had the largest number of canceled flights with 16 canceled and 20 delayed, while Southwest had the largest number of delays as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, with 383 flights delayed and eight canceled. United delayed 65 and canceled five by Tuesday morning.

Yesterday, over 1,100 flights were delayed or canceled at DIA because of high winds up to 45 mph. Although winds slowed in much of the state Tuesday, gusts as high as 47 mph are expected at DIA, according to the National Weather Service. On Wednesday, gusts at the airport may slow to 28 mph.
