Bears’ Cairo Santos bemoans kick ‘that got away’

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Whether because of a plumbing issue or just old-fashioned rivalry shenanigans, the Bears didn’t have hot water in their locker-room showers after their 31-7 loss Sunday to the Packers.

Cairo Santos said he probably needed a cold shower, anyway, after he missed his only field-goal try — a 43-yarder midway through the third quarter that would have cut the Bears’ deficit to 20-10. Santos missed the kick heading into the north end zone, where the wind drove both kickers crazy all game.

Packers kicker Trey Smack missed two field goals and an extra point. His two field-goal misses, from 43 and 47 yards, were into the north end zone in the fourth quarter. His missed extra point was heading south.

‘‘Kicking toward the north end zone, it was brutal,’’ Santos said.

The notes Santos took before the game showed the swirling wind eventually tailed further right than left. When he tossed grass in the air, however, it tailed left. He trusted his pregame notes — and missed to the left.

The Bears don’t play many noon games at Lambeau Field and even fewer when the weather is 73 degrees at kickoff, as it was Sunday. Still, Santos wasn’t making excuses. The Bears’ field-goal operation was another thing that went wrong in the game.

‘‘I needed to be my best,’’ he said. ‘‘Definitely one that got away.’’
