Here’s what happened Friday at Halas Hall:
Santos still out
Kicker Cairo Santos, who made a surprise appearance on the Bears’ projected injury report Thursday, did not practice Friday, either. He has a right hip problem. Special teams coordinator Richard Hightower didn’t elaborate, other than to say that he was “obviously dealing with something.”
The Bears have yet to add a placekicker to their roster but would have to by 3 p.m. Monday if Santos isn’t in their plans. Jake Moody, who kicked in two games for an injured Santos last year, remains available.
Monangai, Stevenson practice
Running back Kyle Monangai (right knee) seems good to go for Monday. He was a full participant Friday. Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson (hamstring) practiced, albeit it on a limited basis, one day after the projected injury report said he would not have participated.
Linebacker Noah Sewell (Achilles’ tendon) and defensive lineman Shemar Turner (knee) were both limited but can’t return until Week 5.
Rule change?
Hightower and fellow NFL’s special teams coordinators met virtually late Friday to discuss a potential rule change. Last year, the league’s new kickoff rule allowed for a 12th player to hold the ball on the tee in case of weather. During the offseason, the league allowed it regardless of weather.
Last week, the Eagles had Braden Mann hold Jake Elliott’s ball at an angle — and not on a tee — to make for a nastier squib kick. The Falcons did it in Week 1. Hightower said that was against “the intent of the rule.” It wouldn’t be surprising if the rule was re-written with a more clear directive.
