A truck driver who caused an eight-vehicle crash on the 10 Freeway in Ontario that killed three people and injured others will be sentenced next week.
Jashanpreet Singh, 21, of Yuba City, pleaded guilty on June 16 to three felony counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, court records show. He is scheduled for a July 14 sentencing at Rancho Cucamonga Superior Court.
It wasn’t clear how much prison time he faces. The prosecutor on the case, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office and Singh’s deputy public defender could not be reached for comment on Friday.
Singh had also been charged with driving under the influence causing injury, but it was later determined he was not driving drunk.
“Toxicology reports confirmed none of the substances tested were present in the defendant’s blood at the time the test was rendered,” the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
Singh, who is originally from India, is in the U.S. unlawfully, according to the Department of Homeland Security. He first entered the country in 2022.
Homeland Security also said Singh had applied for asylum.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged the detainer, signaling that federal authorities should be notified 48 hours before Singh is released from local custody.
“It is a terrible tragedy three innocent people lost their lives due to the reckless open border policies that allowed an illegal alien to be released into the U.S. and drive an 18-wheeler on America’s highways,” former Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said at the time that the detainer was issued.
Singh was driving a Freightliner semitruck westbound on the 10 Freeway, near the 15 Freeway interchange, about 1:10 p.m. on Oct. 21, 2025, when he failed to stop for slowed traffic, which led to a collision involving four big rigs and four other vehicles, California Highway Patrol officials said
One of the vehicles burst into flames. Clarence Nelson, 76, of Fontana and his 69-year-old wife, Lisa Nelson, died. Clarence Nelson was a former assistant basketball coach at Pomona High School.
A third victim, Jaime Flores Garcia, 54, of Upland, died at a hospital.
As of Friday, Singh was being held without bail at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto.
