Erin Moriarty Opens Up About Why She Won’t Watch ‘The Boys’ Season 5

Last year, “The Boys” star Erin Moriarty revealed that she was suffering from health issues and was ultimately diagnosed with Graves’ disease. The actress, who portrays Annie January in the superhero show, took part in filming the fifth and final season while the condition was at its worst.

Moriarty initially believed the symptoms she experienced were to do with working too hard, saying, “One thing I can say: if I hadn’t chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would’ve caught this sooner.”

Now, she has revealed the full impact of her Graves’ disease diagnosis and how it affected her enjoyment and experience on the final instalment of “The Boys.” In fact, things were so bad, that Moriarty has also explained that she won’t watch season 5 of the show due to the “physical and mental toll” it took on her.

Erin Moriarty Reveals How Bad Her Graves’ Disease Symptoms Got

In a story posted to her official Instagram account, Moriarty shared an image of her leg strapped up in a bandage alongside a long caption that detailed what it was like filming the fifth season of “The Boys” while suffering from the symptoms of Graves’ disease.

In the caption, Moriarty gives fans an insight into just how bad her symptoms got during the filming process, leading her to even start to lose the ability to walk.

“Okay, so: season 5, episode 4 of The Boys is one of the most important episodes I’ve ever shot. Unfortunately, that part of the season coincided with my health issues peaking before my diagnosis,” she wrote in the social media post. “I’m saving you the gnarly part of this picture but not long after this episode, I started to lose the ability to walk. The numbness in my feet led to a lot of falling.”

She continued, “The night before we shot my segment of this episode, I fell and shredded up my knee. I barely have any bts shots of this season, especially as things worsened. This isn’t a pity post. It’s mostly to say: [expletive] autoimmune disease. [expletive] it so hard.”

The actress also had a message for those who have criticized her changing appearance in the final season due to the health condition. She added, “[expletive] the ignorance surrounding it, too. I can’t remedy that ignorance but not being outspoken about it occasionally feels wrong.”

The Actress Says She Won’t Watch Season 5 of ‘The Boys’ Due to the Mental and Physical Strain of the Condition

Meanwhile, in a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Moriarty also explained the reason why she won’t watch the fifth season of “The Boys.” Admitting that she has previously watched every episode of the show, the actress said that the mental and physical toll of being diagnosed with Graves’ disease and managing the symptoms makes it too difficult to relive that time of her life.

“It did lead to me not being as present for Annie during this final season as I would’ve hoped, and that was super painful for me. I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m failing Annie and I’m failing our audience,’” Erin said.

She added, “It was like I was offline for the first six to seven episodes, and then I came back online. I finally felt present at the very end of season five. I wasn’t able to transcend the physical and mental toll that this disease took on me until episode seven. It’s a testament to how profoundly impactful these autoimmune diseases can be, and I don’t think that people are aware to the degree that they can be.”

“I’ve watched every season of ‘The Boys.’ I love this show so much,” she said. “But I’m not watching the final season simply because it’s really important for me at this moment in time to put my psychological health above all other things.”
