Nintendo Switch 2 will support existing Joy-Cons and 1080p claims report

Another report has claimed to have inside knowledge about Nintendo’s next console, which will apparently sport revamped Joy-Cons with new buttons.

Shortly after reports circulated that Nintendo’s follow-up to the Switch will have magnetic Joy-Cons, more information has been released from another source in manufacturing.

While Nintendo hasn’t officially announced anything about its next console, various reports have suggested it will be backwards compatible, will feature a bigger 8-inch LCD screen, and will be an ‘iteration rather than revolution’ over the original console.

A third party controller manufacturer named Mobapad, which is ‘actively developing next generation console peripherals’, has now seemingly released more details about the console – which also line-up with previous rumours.

According to Mobapad, the next Switch will be backwards compatible with existing Joy-Cons and the Pro Controller. The console will apparently be backwards compatible with physical and digital Switch games too, but new Switch 2 cartridges will not work on the original Switch (naturally).

Along with supporting previous rumours around the Joy-Cons being magnetically attached to the console, the blog post claims the new larger Joy-Cons have a new button ‘on both the left and right sides’ next to the L, ZL, R, ZR shoulder buttons – but there’s no indication of what it’s for.

Other alleged details in the report include a new ‘additional function button’ below the Home button on the right Joy-Con, a dock that supports 4K resolution, an 8-inch screen which supports 1080p resolution (the current Switch only supports 720p), and a ‘damping bracket’ on the back of the dock – which might refer to a recent patent relating to a ‘swivel block’ attachment.

While it’s unclear why a Switch third party controller manufacturer would publish this information, trusted Nintendo source Pyoro has indicated that the information has been floating around for a while now, between manufacturers in China, although they can’t personally verify it.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Nintendo’s next console had been internally delayed from 2024 to March 2025. According to various sources, it’s believed Nintendo pushed the console back in order to launch with a stronger line-up of first party software.

The biggest question at the moment is when Nintendo will reveal the Switch successor. The company recently confirmed it won’t be at Gamescom in August, so if the console is coming out in March next year, it may follow the pattern of the original Switch – which was revealed in October prior to launching in March 2017.
