Raye has added another major accolade to her collection after winning the 2026 Mercury Prize, although fans hoping for more music from the singer might have quite a wait on their hands.

The British superstar, 28, was crowned the winner at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on Thursday night for her critically acclaimed second album, This Music May Contain Hope.

She beat an impressive collection of musical heavyweights to the honour, including Sir Paul McCartney, Florence + The Machine, Olivia Dean, JADE and Dave.

The victory marks another remarkable milestone for the singer, whose career has gone from strength to strength since she broke free from her record label and became an independent artist.

However, despite her extraordinary success, Raye has previously delivered some rather disappointing news for fans eagerly awaiting her third album.

The singer has already decided it will be called And Then She Fell In Love, but has insisted she won’t write a single song for the project until she experiences its titular emotion.

And she’s prepared to wait as long as it takes.

Speaking to The Sunday Times earlier this year, she explained: ‘I’m not writing a single song – be it one year, five years, 10 years – until that chapter of my life begins.’

It’s quite the commitment from an artist who has spent much of her career turning romantic misfortune into musical gold.

Her latest album features songs including Beware… The South London Lover Boy and The WhatsApp Shakespeare, while its breakout hit Where Is My Husband! became a viral sensation and reached number one in the UK charts.

During a previous TikTok livestream, Raye admitted she had grown tired of writing about being single and having her heart broken.

She declared that when her next album finally arrives, she wants it to be a celebration of being in love rather than another exploration of why it hasn’t worked out.

Fortunately, it seems the universe has delivered at least one of the things she’s been hoping for.

Following her Mercury Prize victory, Raye joked that she had been praying for either a boyfriend or the prestigious award ahead of her 29th birthday on Saturday.

Evidently, the Mercury judges got there first.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, the singer described the victory as the ‘best birthday present’ she could have hoped for.

‘I just poured so much heart into this album, I really did,’ she told NME and other media in the winners’ room.

Reflecting on the years she spent fighting to release music on her own terms, Raye admitted the recognition was particularly meaningful.

‘I just feel seriously seen, you know?’ she said.

The London-born musician previously spoke publicly about her frustrations with her former record label, Polydor, before parting ways with the company in 2021.

She subsequently released her debut album, My 21st Century Blues, independently in 2023, laying the foundations for an extraordinary run of success.

In 2024, she made history at the Brit Awards by collecting six trophies in a single evening, more than any other artist had previously won at one ceremony.

Now, her second album has earned her one of British music’s most prestigious honours.

Raye also spoke about the challenges of making it in the industry as a young woman, particularly without the backing of a major record label.

‘It’s not an easy industry and it’s not easy coming up as a young woman,’ she admitted, before encouraging aspiring musicians to keep pursuing their ambitions.

‘Eventually, one little door will creep open and then you just run.’

Her winning record, which topped the UK album charts following its release in March, was praised by Mercury Prize judges for its extraordinary musical ambition.

Drawing on everything from jazz and soul to classical music and R&B, the sprawling project features orchestral arrangements and deeply personal explorations of love, self-worth and mental health.

The singer revealed that one of the songs she was proudest of was I Know You’re Hurting, which emerged from an emotional conversation with her band about men’s mental health.

The victory also comes at a particularly busy moment for Raye, who is set to perform the entire album alongside an orchestra at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Friday night.

Despite having plenty to celebrate, she insisted there would be no wild partying after the awards ceremony, explaining that she needed to protect her voice ahead of the performance.

Instead, she planned to head straight to bed, although she suspected the excitement might make sleeping difficult.

As for when fans can expect that third album, it appears the only person who can answer that question is Raye’s future romantic partner.

And given that Where Is My Husband! has already become one of the defining hits of her career, perhaps someone should get a move on.
