An armed man suspected of attempting to carjack a big rig on the 210 Freeway in Sylmar on Tuesday was taken into custody following a shooting by at least one Los Angeles Police Department officer.
LAPD narcotics officers assigned to the Mission Division responded around 1 p.m. to the 14000 block of Bledsoe Street, about a quarter-mile north of the freeway, searching for the wanted suspect, police said.
The officers located the man, who then ran onto the westbound freeway while armed with a handgun and attempted to carjack a big rig, police said.
The truck could be seen stopped on the freeway near the overpass.
The suspect was given multiple commands by officers to drop the weapon but was noncompliant, resulting in a shooting by police, according to the LAPD.
The suspect fell to the ground after being struck near the handgun and continued to ignore officers’ commands, police said, adding that a 40mm less lethal launcher was then deployed to assist with his compliance.
He was eventually taken into custody and taken to a hospital for medical clearance.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed there was a shooting on the freeway involving police.
“We are still in the early stages of this investigation as there are still multiple witnesses to interview, to include the officers involved, as well as video to review and evidence to examine,” police said in a statement.
Police said that no one was injured in the shooting.
A handgun was also visible on the freeway, which police said will be booked into evidence and submitted for forensic analysis.
No information was immediately available about the suspect or how many shots were fired.
The westbound freeway was closed at the 118 Freeway throughout the afternoon as the investigation continued, causing a major traffic backup heading into the evening rush hour.
It was unclear when the westbound freeway might reopen.
