Bears report: Injured Coby Bryant progressing but without an exact return date

Coby Bryant Update
Ben Johnson is keeping it vague on Coby Bryant. The Bears safety is progressing through rehab but Johnson was non-committal about whether he’ll return this season.

“From what I understand, he’s right on track,” Johnson said. “He’s working his tail off. Love seeing him in the building. He’s around these guys all the time. And really, over the next month, that’ll go a long way to see whether we can get him back this year or not.”

Johnson said that Bryant will progress to running on land in the “near future,” but that practicing change of direction will reveal more about his trajectory.

“We’re still a little ways away from him doing the change of direction stuff,” Johnson said. “That’s really going to be the stress test with him is being able to really push down on that knee and change direction at a high velocity. So that’s still a little ways away.”

Bryant was the Bears biggest acquisition of the off-season, but he injured his knee during training camp and required surgery in August.

Attendance
Cornerbacks Malik Muhammad II (toe) and Tyrique Stevenson Sr. (hamstring) were both absent from practice Wednesday. Linebackers T.J. Edwards (hamstring) and Jack Sanborn (concussion) returned to practice.
