Mark Carney Slammed by Canadian Press for Giving Exclusives to American Media

The New York Times’ Canada bureau chief Matina Stevis-Gridneff on Sunday announced that the Times had published the full transcript of its hour-long interview with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney. Stevis-Gridneff noted that the transcript is 8,000+ words in length, and she shared a gift link to the article.

She added: “We wrote 4 stories, but there are more to be done & I hope others pick up where we left off. I had domestic questions I didn’t get a chance to ask, so the work continues.”

Fellow journalist Terry Newman of the Canadian media outlet National Post voiced skepticism of the Times interview. Asking if Carney requested editorial oversight and whether the Times granted it, Newman added, “I don’t think I recall any other foreign news outlet doing several interviews with the leader of another country and then promoting those interviews for free in that other country.”

[NOTE: Canadian public broadcaster CBC covered the interview under the headline,: ‘Carney tells NYT he studied risk of U.S.-led military action in Canada.’]

Newman also responded by writing an op-ed titled, ‘Has Anyone Told Carney He Can Do Interviews with Canadian Media?’ The subhead of the article is: “Since trade talks with the U.S. dissolved, Carney has granted exclusive sit-down interviews to two U.S. outlets, but none in Canada.”

[NOTE: In addition to the Times, Carney — a former chairman of the Board of Directors for Bloomberg L.P. — also sat down for a one-on-one interview with Bloomberg News.]
