Residents baffled after ‘quadruple’ yellow lines appear on street

Residents have been left puzzled after discovering four yellow lines that were painted on their street.

The bizarre road markings were found on Markham Crescent in York after maintenance crews resurfaced a stretch of road riddled with potholes.

After contractors finished the work last Thursday, they painted fresh yellow lines next to where the original ones had been covered by tarmac.

However, just one day later, residents started to notice another set of lighter yellow lines that had been painted directly over the existing markings.

Now, locals are voicing their fury over what appears to be ‘quadruple’ yellow lines.

One resident said that the markings had caused ‘utter confusion’ for motorists.

Another added: ‘Just fire whoever painted them because that is just ridiculous.’

Naj Mahmud, who runs the Park View guest house on the corner of the street, also said he was left baffled by the work.

‘I have no idea why they did it,’ he said. ‘I have nothing to say. They just did it.’

He went on to describe the work as ‘definitely’ not being a good job.

Another resident joked: ‘I bet the contractor won’t be asked to do the repair for free!

‘What on earth was somebody thinking? They get to the site, see double yellows already in place and then think – oh, it looks like the road needs four yellow lines not two – unbelievable!’

They added: ‘If I were the council I would seriously reconsider the competence of the team that painted the third and fourth lines!

‘Common sense is clearly not common!’

Issuing a statement, a City of York Council spokesperson admitted that the work had not been completed to the required standard.

‘This work clearly hasn’t been completed to our high standards, something our external contractor accepts,’ they said.

‘It has confirmed the work will be redone by the end of this weekend at the latest, after which it will be inspected by our highways team.’
