5 fatally shot in Mundelein home in apparent murder-suicide

Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide after five family members were found fatally shot inside a home late Sunday in far northwest suburban Mundelein.

Officers conducted a well-being check in the 200 block of Wellington Street around 11:45 p.m. and found the family members — three men and two women — dead inside the home, according to Mundelein police. All of the deceased are believed to be shot at close range with a handgun, the initial investigation concluded.

Two of the victims lived at the Wellington home where they were found, police said. Four of the victims were family members while the last is believed to be in a domestic relationship with the suspect.

“The Mundelein Police Department extends its condolences to the victims loved ones and recognizes the impact this tragedy has had on our community,” police said in a statement.

Two handguns were found at the scene, police said. The shooting appears to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public, police said.

The victims haven’t yet been identified by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Anyone with additional information is encouraged to call the Mundelein Police Department at 847-968-4600.
