Breaking down the Bears’ Thursday training camp practice:
What happened
It was a relatively light day for the Bears as rain drizzled and practice moved indoors midway through when lightning struck near Halas Hall.
Quarterback Caleb Williams, who won’t play Saturday against the Browns, was up and down in the few times he threw. There were several drops, including one by wide receiver Rome Odunze up the sideline and another by running back Kyle Monangai in the flats, but also one by linebacker T.J. Edwards on a would-be interception against Williams. Edwards and Williams laughed about the play afterward, with Williams appearing to acknowledge that Edwards surprised him by cutting into his throwing lane.
Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent, who will start Saturday, closed practice with a deep shot to wide receiver Kaden Davis for a touchdown.
Position battle
Bears coach Ben Johnson hoped to have some clarity at left tackle by now, but that’s been hard to get with leader Braxton Jones sidelined by a knee injury. Jones went through the early part of practice before leaving, and the Bears plan to start Kiran Amegadjie against the Browns, followed by Jedrick Wills.
Injury watch
While Johnson has maintained these are relatively minor injuries, defensive end Montez Sweat and cornerbacks Tyrique Stevenson, Jaylon Jones and Terell Smith didn’t practice.
What’s next?
The Bears likely will have their starters go through warmups or some other workout Saturday morning at Soldier Field, then leave the game itself mostly to the reserves. They’ll get the starters back in action at practice Sunday afternoon.
