Cubs assistant general manager Jared Banner named Orioles’ GM

The Cubs’ front office lost a key cog to another team Monday.

Jared Banner, who had worked under president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer since 2020, was named the general manager of the Orioles, a step up after three seasons as an assistant GM with the Cubs.

Banner, 41, started his career with the Red Sox in 2007, a tenure that saw him overlap with Hoyer and former Cubs president Theo Epstein. He joined the Cubs as a vice president in charge of special projects in 2020, worked as vice president of player development in 2022 and 2023 and was named an assistant GM in 2024.

Banner began the 2026 season as one of three Cubs assistant GMs — alongside Ehsan Bokhari and Garrett Chiado — working with GM Carter Hawkins.

In Baltimore, Banner will work alongside president of baseball operations Mike Elias with the goal of returning the Orioles to prominence in the competitive American League East after a stalled rebuilding effort yielded back-to-back sub-.500 seasons following a couple of trips to the postseason.

Meanwhile, the Cubs’ front office enters the offseason with its own hefty to-do list in the wake of the team’s disappointing finish to the season. The Cubs were on the wrong end of sweep in the National League wild-card round against the Padres.
