Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman leaves game after being hit in face by foul ball

CINCINNATI — Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman left the game Sunday against the Reds after being hit in the face by a foul ball off Michael Busch’s bat while standing near the on-deck circle.

Bregman wasn’t in the circle; he was standing on the grass, not that far from the plate. The left-handed-hitting Busch checked his swing on a pitch from Reds righty Luis Mey, and the ball bounced before striking Bregman. He appeared to get hit just below his left eye, and blood dripped from his face.

Matt Shaw pinch-hit for Bregman, who had an RBI single in the first inning. He also walked and scored in the Cubs’ four-run third.
