CPD officer chased, shot person who allegedly tried to rob car of undercover ATF agents in Country Club Hills

An undercover Chicago police officer chased and shot a person after a group of people tried to rob a car full of undercover Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents earlier this week in Country Club Hills, according to Chicago’s police oversight agency.

It started during a firearm trafficking operation Tuesday in the southwest suburb.

Around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, several people walked up to a vehicle with undercover ATF agents — who were conducting a firearms trafficking operation in the 18800 block of Loretto Lane — and attempted to rob them. That’s when one of the agents opened fire, hitting one of the robbers, according to a news release from the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.

A Chicago police officer detailed to a gang investigations unit with the agents saw the shooting. He then chased the other assailants as they tried to flee in a vehicle, the release said. At some point, both vehicles stopped, and both drivers got out, and the officer shot the other driver.

Both suspects who were shot were in critical condition and were taken to hospitals, where their conditions were stabilized — and where they also were placed under arrest. A law enforcement officer was taken to a hospital for observation as well.

Three additional offenders were apprehended at the scene, the spokesperson said. The FBI and Illinois State Police also were assisting with the investigation, the ATF said.
